| SKYWARN (Page
Rev: 11/17/03) |
SKYWARN is a loosely knit organization. Training will be provided
by the local NWS office and consists of a 2-3 hour session where they provide
training on observing cloud formations and weather conditions. You do not
have to be an expert or meteorologist. They are primarily interested
in weather conditions where their systems do not provide sufficient detail
and are looking for real time reports of any hail, wind damage,
flash flooding, heavy rain, snow, and tornado development (yes,
we have about 6 per year in the Sacramento Valley), in order to effectively
warn the public.
Even as new technology allows the National Weather Service to issue warnings
with more lead time, spotters will always be needed as links between radar
indications of severe weather and ground truth information.
